A Uganda girl, Phiona, world opens up as she becomes more successful as a chess player.
Wonderfully acted by all three leads. Highlighted by Nalwanga as Phiona. She is in almost all scenes. She carries the film.
As for the film. It is a great story. A Disney story. The underdog making good.
However, it is a story about chess. Not putting down chess but, it is slow, and boring as a movie.
Over two hours. This film needed editing bad. Like a good 30 minutes hacked off. It is one of Disneys problems, which is, if they can have one tear jerk moment why not have 20 more. Added to bending the heart strings too often we have way to many scenes of practicing chess. Edit Edit Edit!!
It is sad because it is an incredible story. It was just boring. So 2 1/2 stars out of 5 for Queen Of Katwe.
This film will be available January 31st for home viewing.
