It is an acting class.
There is a moment between Chastain and Elba at about the 2 hour mark where Elba's Charlie Jaffey comes back into the office to give Chatain's Molly Bloom an offer and they go at it toe to toe and it is magic. That scene should give them both an Oscar Nomination if not a win.
Now the two leads are fantastic, but how about the film?
The film is two hours and 20 minutes long, but it did not seem like it. Sorkin and Chastain keep you on the edge of your seat because it starts with her being raided by the FBI. So you know what is coming but you are so interested how she got to that point through the flashbacks as she tells us her story. It also helps that this story is crazy true.
There are problems. The film is close to perfect for the first 2 hours. Then it seems rushed. Drug use seems brushed over. Relationship with her father (Underused Costner) is real quick even though it is a big overlying factor in her personality. Then there is the end...it just falls flat. There is nothing to tell us anything about Molly after the hearings. What happened to her? Where is she? Nothing. We just spent all that time with her...caring about her....and we know nothing by watching this movie.
To be fair I went home and used the Google machine and looked her up....there is nothing there either. Maybe she is laying low because of the mob, however say that or note that. Do not leave it where it did (No Spoilers).
4 stars out of 5 for Molly's Bloom. An oddly true story with fantastic performances. Yet a thunp of an ending.
