My Number 4 Favorite Film Of 20

Image result for league of their own

We are getting closer to number 1.
People who are regular followers of my blog know I am a biiig baseball fan.'
So of course this had to be in my top 20!!!
A League Of Their Own.

It is funny how the trailer does not touch on the real theme of the film. The trailer makes it seem like the film was a comedy. I guess at the time that is what sold the film. You got Hanks and Penny Marshall coming off Big. I guess they thought that was the best way, but in reality this film has heart. Many themes:
The time period of war which gives these women freedom to grow, but also the heartbreak of war still hangs over their heads which kind of boxes them in.
The Battle between two sisters played by Geena Davis and Lori Petty, one tired of living in the shadow of an older sister: and the older sister who really is not interested in being out in front.
Yes it has comedy Madonna is funny: Megan Cavanagh as Marla Hooch is awesome; lets not forget Bitty Schram as Evelyn Gardner who is wonderful; Jon Lovitz was hilarious
Still the center is Tom Hanks and Penny Marshall.
I do not understand Penny Marshall. Maybe she does not want to work. Or has been blackballed for some reason. She knows comedy, and has a great sense of when and how to mix tones, but after this and Big she only did 3 more movies and has not done a film since 2001. It is just odd.
Tom Hanks as Jimmy Dugan is just great here and so underrated here. He is man looking for redemption. He is an alcoholic trying to crawl out of a hole. He just gets in his own way. Then he becomes caretaker to these women, they give him a purpose. He helps them, but they save him.

Fun facts:
-All the injuries you see on the screen were all actual injuries
-Lori petty and Rosie O' Donnell were the two best players on the field
-The role of Dottie Hinson went from Brooke Shields; to Debra Winger; to Geena Davis who tried out for the part in Penny Marshalls backyard.
-The Rockford Peaches home games were filmed in 101 degree heat in a renovated stadium in Huntingburg Indiana.

My number 4 out of 20 favorite films is A League Of Their Own.

Always remember, there is no crying in baseball.

From the shadows as always thanks for your time.
