Very good performances by:
Steve Carell as distraught father David Sheff
Timothee Chalamet as sadly on drugs Nic Sheff
Maura Tierney as Nic's Stepmom in an underrated performance.
Amy Ryan as Vicki Sheff, Nic's mother (Yes steve Carell and Amy Ryan are married here...think about that!!).
So really good performances in a film that is just soso. It drags. It shows the same thing over and over and over again. David Sheff being sad. Nic doing drugs. Over and over. It does not make for a good movie. We do see scenes with Nic in his younger days, free and happy to show us the dark and light of the changes in his life. Still...the film drags. I just feel like this was probably better as a book and maybe just left there, where it can also give us the thoughts of the characters, which cannot be done in a film without voice overs.
Even worse..........................it does not give us the payoff at the end. We wallowed for sooo long, show us the good....at least so far. Bad decision by Director Felix Van Groeningen.
Well 2 1/2 for all those wonderful performances. I am sure you can relate if addiction lays its ugly head into your home.
