New Film Review: Burnt

BURNT
Directed by John Wells
Screenplay/Story by Steven Knight and Michael Kalesniko
Starring: Sienna Miller; Bradley Cooper; and Daniel Bruhl

Adam Jones (Bradley Cooper) is a Chef who destroyed his career with drugs and diva behavior. He cleans up and returns to London, determined to redeem himself by spearheading a top restaurant that can gain three Michelin stars.

Well, this film is getting beat up a bit by critics. It is not that bad. It is almost a sports film in the kitchen.
It has some nice performances. Bradley Cooper playing against type is really good. Sienna Miller as Helene, a single mother who is also an up and coming chef, is fantastic. I wished she was on the screen more. Daniel Bruhl as Tony the owner of the, I guess, Restaurant/ Hotel that Adam is making his comeback at is also very good and plays off the wired Bradley Cooper's character very well.
So you have a very strong cast. Now for the plot/script.
It is hard to like Bradley Cooper here. He is nasty and wired all the time. Plus annoyingly cocky. I am no expert here but I am sure there are great chefs out there who do not constantly break plates and belittle the employees around him. There was really one nice scene with Bradley Cooper's Adam and Sienna Miller's daughter, I wish there was a lot more of that in this comeback/redemption story. The angry chef act is getting cliché in the cinema and on TV these days.
A couple last notes:
-Nice small performances in this film by Omar Sy (who shocks us in this film); Emma Thompson (her part could have been edited out but you do not edit out Emma); and Uma Thurman (With some real bad makeup).
- Alicia Vikander is in this film!! I noted in past blogs this is the year of Alicia. Lets see the films:
Burnt
Ex Machina
Testament Of Youth
The Man From U.N.C.L.E
The Danish Girl which has not been released in full yet but I hear it is her best performance.

Well 3 stars out of 5 for Burnt. It is not as bad as what critics are saying. To pay to see it at the theatre? That is your call. It is definitely worth a look when it reaches home viewing. It will for sure make you hungry!!

From the shadows as always thanks for your time.
