Monday Recommended: Flipped

Each Monday I try to recommend a film that may have passed you by.

FLIPPED
Directed by Rob Reiner
Screenplay: Rob Reiner and Andrew Scheinman
Based on the book by Wendelin Van Draanen
Starring: Madeline Carroll; Callan McAuliffe; and John Mahoney

Juli Baker (Carroll) has loved Bryce Loskie (McAuliffe)  since he has moved across the street when they were in 2nd grade. Unfortunately, Bryce has never felt the same. Frankly, he thinks Juli and her family are a little weird. See, Juli raises chickens, and sits in trees, in fact she loves trees. Then, in eighth grade,....well things change.

I am a big fan of Rob Reiner (Stand By Me) especially when he delves into adolescence, and growing up in small towns. He does not miss here. Flipped is a wonderful film highlighted by Madeline Carroll as Juli. She makes this film work, you feel her pain and joy and confusion.
This is a family film for children 9 and up. It delves into respecting differences and kindness to others. It is a sweet, sometimes sad, and corny film. It also touches on ...not judging a family or a person by the way they look or live. If there is a negative about this film it fights itself with tone...there is  a little meanness in the film and that is so strong of a tone the film has trouble breaking away from it. Plus....my last thing..after watching...WOW is that basket lunch a real thing???!! Wow that can not be allowed in schools anymore lol.

I give Flipped 4 out of 5 stars for this nice Rob Reiner film. Move it to the top of your queue.

From the shadows as always thanks for your time.
