ABOUT TIME 2013

Direction and Screenplay by Richard Curtis
Starring: Domhnall Gleeson; Rachel McAdams; Bill Nighy

From the people who brought you Love Actually and Notting Hill!!!

When Tim (Gleeson) turns 21 his father (Nighy) informs him he can travel in time and change what happens and what has happened in his own life. He learns the proper way to use this power and also learn about life.

This film I think was marketed wrong. I really think the film is not as much about time travel, but it is about how we use our time.
The film is highlighted by many good performances:
Gleeson is fantastic. Here he often says so much without speaking.
Nighy, is very good as a father, without an ego even though he has this power also. He is kind and loving.
McAdams is a little underutilized, but when she is on screen she lights it up. O love Rachel McAdams!!
There are two other roles that should be mentioned, Lydia Wilson as Kit Kat, Tim's sister. She does a wonderful job in a small part. Somehow, with a small part she still makes you worry about her.
Margot Robbie before she became, well Margot Robbie, as Kit Kat's friend. Just proves again Richard Curtis is a master of telling stories utilizing and getting the most from everyone on set.

Yes, the film has some holes in it, and could have used a little editing, but as always Richard Curtis knows how to tell a story.  About Time is funny, sad at times, with an umbrella of love.

About Time is available on Netflix,

HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PT 1 AND 2 (2010 and 2011)

Directed by David Yates
Screenplay by Steve Kloves
Based on the book by some unknown mmmm..J.K Rowling

I think people forget how good this series was. It did have its ups and downs but, it did a fantastic job of bringing these books to life.
I combined these films because lets face it, it is one story.

So much happened here:

We learned Snape, the late great Alan Rickman (Hurts to type that), had nothing but love in his heart.
We saw the chosen one Harry, the underrated Daniel Radcliffe, convincingly right the wrongs of the past, and prove he was indeed the chosen one.
We see that Hagrid (Robbie Coltrain) and Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint), will stay brave and loyal to the end.

You think Wonder Woman this decade introduced us to women superheroes? Wrong!! :
Luna Lovegood (Evanna Lynch)
Ginny Weasley aka Mrs Harry Potter (Bonnie Wright)
Professor Minerva McGonagall (Maggie Smith)
The brilliant Hermione Granger the perfectly cast Emma Watson
Molly Weasley played by the great Julie Waters with the best line "NOT MY DAUGHTER YOU BITCH"!
These ladies were the first superheroes in the movies this decade!!

We saw sadness of  Draco Malfoy the underrated Tom Felton
The perfect Voldemort Ralph Fiennes
AND THEN.....The quiet hero who raised up at the perfect time...Neville Longbottom (Matthew Lewis)

So much happened in this long two part film. I think this film gets shown so often on TV that we sometimes forget how wonderful they are.  It is good vs Evil. Good wins.

And by the way...THAT SCORE...THAT UNDERRATED SCORE!!!

You can pretty much find these two films everywhere.

THE MARTIAN 2015

Directed by Ridley Scott
Screenplay by Drew Goddard
Based on the book by Andy Weir
Starring: Matt Damon and Mars

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to survive and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive.

Damon and Scott!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is crazy here is, most of the time I have no idea what NASA and Damon are talking about or planning or doing, but somehow they have me on the edge of my seat.
Casting!! So many good performances, I am not going to even bother to name all of them. However I will highlight a couple:
Donald Glover, as Rich Purnell is brilliant and funny at the same time. And important.
Mackenzie Davis as Mindy Park also gives many scene stealing scenes.
The look of this film is phenomenal. The special effects cannot be matched. From Mars to the ships you really feel like you are right there.
My last note.... I think this film is so important to show to your children. It should be almost mandatory in Middle Schools. Why? Science and math!!! I know it is fiction but it shows students where the science and math that they are being taught in the schools can be used out in the real world, be it Mars or this planet. Or maybe it will at least get them to pick up Weirs' book.
For the love of science and math and film!

The Martian is available for home viewing.

And so it begins...17-16-15 comes next.

From the shadows as always thanks for your time.
