New Film Review: Stan And Ollie
STAN AND OLLIE
3 out of 5
It was a little bit different then I thought. I thought the film would follow the career of Stan Laurel (Steve Coogan) and Oliver Hardy (John C Reilly). I was wrong. The film opens at their peak and then jumps ahead many years as their popularity started to go down hill.
It was well acted by both leads. With wonderful performances by Shirley Henderson and Ida Kitaeva Laurel as the wives of Stan and Ollie.
So the performances are very good, as for the script....it kind of drags.
As noted before, we see their slow decline in popularity. So we do not see the movies, but we do follow them on a tour through post war Europe. During this time they seem to know things are going down hill but they don't want to talk about it.
It is an interesting story but it goes in circles...try to get okay for a movie...worry..do a stage show..try to get a movie deal...worry...do a stage show. The strange thing is...I imagine they were long stage shows but they keep showing us the same 3 routines over and over. You would think to make it more....interesting... maybe SHOW US ANOTHER ROUTINE!!!
Well I learned a lot, and it was well acted, but for an hour and a half film it felt long.
3 out of 5 stars just better than average. Worth a look for home viewing when it comes available.
From the shadows as always thanks for your time.
