THE SHADOW AWARDS 2018!!!
The awards known through out the world as the Shadow Awards are here. I am sure the Shadow Awards are bigger than the Oscars at this point. The Shadow Awards involve a ballot to be filled out by one person and that happens to be me.
I know you are excited...but I need you to settle down. The sad news is I canceled the preshow of stars walking the fuchsia carpet (we do not do red carpets it clashes with toe nail polish of too many stars). Also instead of 30 seconds I give the stars 35 seconds for their acceptance speech...I try to be kind...well sometimes.
It is a big week ahead where I will announce my Top Ten Films Of 2018. Also my Oscar predictions will be revealed. Okay. You have to stop being so excited!!! It is annoying!!!
Now to the awards:
THE BEST ACTOR OF THE YEAR AWARD
Bradley Cooper
This was a close race between Cooper and Ethan Hawke. Hawke gave great performances in First Reformed and Juliet Naked. However I gave the edge to Cooper because the performances were bigger and then throw-in Rocket The Racoon in The Avengers film you have the Best Actor Of 2018.
THE BEST ACTRESS OF THE YEAR AWARD
Emily Blunt
This is not even close. No one had a better year then Emily Blunt. In both Mary Poppins and Quiet Place, not only was she in two successful films, but she was great in both films!!
This was too easy.
BEST NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR AWARD
Thomasin McKenzie
This was a close call between Elsie Fisher in Eighth Grade and Thomasin McKenzie in Leave No Trace. I just feel McKenzie's part is much bigger and outside the norm. She is awesome!!!
She is a talent. Do not believe me. You can see Leave No Trace on Amazon Prime.
WORST ACTOR OF THE YEAR AWARD
Sunny Suljic
He was dreadful, close to unwatchable in the film (or bunch of crap) Mid90's.
BEST ANIMATED FILM AWARD
ISLE OF DOGS
Isle Of Dogs or Spiderman Into The Spider-verse. Both very good, but Spiderman was clever but fell into the same type of plot as all live action superhero films, with an exhausting too long battle at the end. Isle Of Dogs was just so different. Wonderful looking. Great casting and voice work, with a good storyline.
BEST ACTION FILM AWARD
Mission Impossible Fallout
There really wasn't a film as exciting and as great looking as Mission Impossible Fall Out. The strange thing is, the series gets better with each Mission Impossible film.
FUNNIEST FILM AWARD
Deadpool 2
It was a really bad year for comedies. I mean look at my list of the worst 10 films of 2018. Sooooo many bad comedies.
Then Deadpool 2 arrives. So dry. So vulgar. So funny. With a storyline that works without the typical 30 minute exhausting end fight scene. This was even better than the first Deadpool film.
BEST ROM COM AWARD
Juliet Naked
Yes these are tough times for rom-coms. I really did not have much to choose from but Juliet Naked is a nice harmless fun film. As a matter of fact Juliet Naked is not only one of the best rom-coms, it is one of the best films of 2018 period.
Well acted by all three leads highlighted by a great performance by Ethan Hawke. It maybe more sweet than funny but it works.
COOLEST IDEA AWARD
Searching
A film that takes place only using a cameras from a computer. Using Face-Time and You Tube videos.
David Kim's daughter is missing and he goes into her computer to find her.
It is a really good film that kind of blows up at the end with a strange twist.
Still it is well done and they took a chance.
BIGGEST SURPRISE AWARD
Bumblebe
After the first Transformers movie, which was pretty good, the rest have been pretty bad and that may be me being nice. In fact I did not even see the last one and I had a pass!!!!!!! Then comes Bumblebee and I thought...UGH! What a surprise.
They did a lot right..
-They got rid of Michael Mann who was all about action and not about story or structure.
-They added a wonderful actor in Hailee Steinfeld as Charlie which gave the film a lot of heart.
-The Hodson brothers wrote a nice story. Again giving the film a little heart. They even put the film in the late 80's which adds fun for the adult viewers, even adding some bad 80's music for laughs.
It just fun and sweet. I left the theater a bit shocked...I wanted more! I wanted to see what happened to Charlie afterwards. I wanted more!!
BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT AWARD
Fantastic Beast The Crimes Of Grindelwald
There was hope after a fun loose Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them.
This is a huuuuge disappointment.
Not enough magic.
Lost all chemistry between certain characters by separating them.
Too many characters to keep track of; and too many characters you do not care about.
Bad CGI
Bad script.
Enough said I guess.
BEST TRAILER AWARD
A Star Is Born
When this trailer broke I was flooded with messages on my blog site:
DID YOU SEE IT??!
IT LOOKS AMAZING RIGHT???!!
LADY GAGA FOR AN OSCAR RIGHT???!! (You say this from just the trailer?)
People were excited.
I will break it down:
It shows Cooper can sing. Who would have thought.
It reveals Gaga in the middle coming out of the darkness slowly with a great shot.
Sam Elliot!!!
The line : "I just want to take another look at you".
Then finish with the Gaga voice!!
It is a perfect trailer that adds excitement...you want to go see the film right away!!
BEST SURPRISE ENDING AWARD
Tully
I did not see it coming. At the 3/4 mark I started thinking...what is happening here. Still I did not see it coming.
It is a pretty good film. With a twinge of sadness.
Well now that the awards are over we will now go to a fine French restaurant called Chick....Fil ...A,
we will toast the victors and laugh at the losers with waffle fries.
From the shadows as always thanks for your help.
