MISS PEREGRINE'S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN

Directed by Tim Burton
Screenplay by Jane Goldman
Based on the books by Ransom Riggs
Starring Eva Green; Asa Butterfield; Samuel Jackson; and Ella Purnell

Well it is different. I did not read the book or books. So the only information I had about this film was in the trailers.
It is not a great film. It is good....mainly because it is so different.

The Acting:
Eva Green is wonderful as Miss Peregrine. I mean when has she been bad in a film? Problem is...the film really loses its ....grip, when she is barely on screen for the last half of the film I wanted more of her. I felt she was the center of the film. I think Burton thought Jake was. No. It was Peregrine because she was so interesting. Jake...not so much.
Asa Butterfield as Jake. Another problem...he has the look of a kid trying to find his way. However I go back to the second half of the film where things kick up a notch and becomes a slight action film and that is where he comes across as being not too believable. It seems like he does not belong in the film. You see that look right there frozen in the trailer. Well that is his "go to" look, that he constantly uses to way to often.
Ella Purnell who plays the part of Emma Bloom absolutely shines. She steals this film. She is the star. Loved her and cared about her. There is a sadness in her, but also she is adventuress and brave, almost like she is trying to knock that sadness out of herself.
Sam Jackson is playing a bad guy as you know named Barron. He was way too far over the top. He seemed almost like he watched Batman films and wanted to be the Joker or something. The strange thing was it seemed he was trying to be funny and all the jokes fell flat.
There are a lot of good underused parts in this film played by Judi Dench; Allison Janney; Rupert Evertt; Terence Stamp; and Chris O'Dowd. However as noted they are all small parts, so they shine and sadly leave.

The Plot:
Of course you know there is a plot about children who ...well you see the title. What they do however without spoiling the film is live the same day over and over again. They call it a loop. By the way which is a big plot hole (Whenever you mess with a time device there is a plot hole....see Harry Potter films).
Every thing in this film seems crammed. Like they were trying to get so much in, and move it along quickly, other than Jake we really did not know anything about the other characters. I wanted to know more about Miss Peregrine. I wanted to know more about the kids. But it just pushed through it. The house. More history. There is an underlying theme here about kids who are different, who just want to fit somewhere and feel comfortable.Wanted to see more of that and I have a feeling that was covered in the books.

The look and Tim Burton:

He is the perfect director for this film. It is odd story and ....that would be Tim Burton. It is beautiful film to watch in fact you could probably turn off the sound and it would play out and you would understand it all.

Did I happen to note that it is odd. Also I do not recommend it for kids under 10. I mean there are some scary scenes in this film. Eating eyeballs. People turning into animals. scary looking giant insect looking things.  31/2 out of 5 for Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. The first half works. The second half gets real messy. After all I noted I hope that it makes enough money to make a second film,. I want to know more about these kids and what becomes of them.

From the shadows as always thanks for your time.
